The School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies provides these academic programs: Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in sociology, along with a Master of Arts (MA) in anthropology. The School also contributes to these joint initiatives: women's studies at the master's level and Canadian studies at the doctoral level.
The sociology MA program is available both full-time and part-time, with instruction in French and English. For English admissions, yearly intake limits follow the guidelines outlined in the "Admission Requirements" section. Following University of Ottawa policy, students may complete assignments, research papers, theses, and exams in either English or French.
The master's program features five pathways: the thesis-based MA, the research paper MA (both of which may include co-op opportunities), a course-based option with potential French immersion, and two microprograms: Advanced Analysis of Qualitative and Quantitative Data, and Methodology Applied to the Professional Environment. Thesis or research paper students may also enroll in the feminist and gender studies collaborative program. Additional details appear in the "Apply for Admission" section.
Faculty members at the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies pursue diverse research interests. To fully appreciate the scope of ongoing research, prospective students should review faculty profiles and their specialized fields, which encompass far more than the research areas highlighted here.
