Within the French Department, you can:

select your specialization from various theoretical approaches across three research areas: Francophone literature (encompassing works from France, Quebec, French Canada, and other French-speaking regions like the Maghreb, sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Belgium, etc.), linguistics and discourse (including historical French language studies, grammar, writing, discourse analysis, rhetoric, and stylistics), and creative writing.
pursue a Master's in French Literature with focus areas in either Women's Studies or Medieval/Renaissance Studies, or a PhD in French Literature specializing in Canadian Studies;
enroll in a joint doctoral program to earn dual degrees from the University of Ottawa and an international partner institution;
participate in intimate seminar settings with limited enrollment (capped at ten students);
enjoy personalized attention from our faculty of approximately twenty professors, each mentoring only a select few thesis projects;
secure research and teaching assistantships to gain valuable professional experience;
present your work at graduate student-led academic conferences.

All candidates must hold a bachelor's degree with specialization, or a bachelor's degree with a major, either in French literature or in French Studies or the equivalent obtained from an accredited university, with an average of at least 70% (B).

The candidate for admission to the field of literary creation must also present a file of texts representative of his or her writing.

In some cases, a candidate will instead be admitted to a preparatory program. This program will aim to provide the training required to pursue master's studies in French Literature. Having successfully completed this program with an average of 70% (B) or more, the candidate will be able to apply for admission to the master's program.
