The Visual Arts Department provides a graduate program culminating in a Master of Arts degree in Contemporary Art Theory (MA).

This bilingual program aims to cultivate research skills across diverse domains of contemporary art history, with an emphasis on producing scholars who specialize in modern art, current visual culture (including film, television, and digital media), and visual theory. Following University of Ottawa guidelines, participants have the option to undertake written work, exams, and studio evaluations in either English or French.

Applicants should have an honours BA in Art History, or an equivalent, with a minimum A- (80%) average in the last two years of study, calculated in accordance with graduate studies guidelines. Applicants who do not have an honours degree in Art History may in suitable cases be recommended by the Visual Arts Department for admission to a qualifying program. Such applicants are usually honours graduates in another subject field.
