The School of Social Work provides both master's and doctoral (PhD) degree programs in social work, with the PhD available in French and English. As an accredited member of the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE), the School's MSS program meets the standards set by the association's Program Accreditation Bureau.
The PhD program aims to develop exceptional researchers and professionals, equipping them with analytical skills to examine micro- and macro-level social work practices while driving innovation in the field. Doctoral candidates will gain comprehensive, critical understanding of social work across various contexts through rigorous scientific research culminating in their thesis. A research-intervention practicum option is also offered.
Two specialized research areas are available in the doctoral program: Health and Family-Childhood studies.
Core courses are delivered in both French and English, with students expected to complete most coursework in their program's primary language. Following University of Ottawa policies, candidates may submit assignments, write their thesis, and answer exam questions in either official language. When the thesis is written in English, a French abstract is required, and vice versa.
