The School of Political Studies, part of the Faculty of Social Science, provides advanced degree programs culminating in Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualifications in Public Administration.

These master's programs focus on delivering cutting-edge theoretical frameworks and conceptual understanding, empowering students to examine and interpret public administration systems while gaining practical expertise for thriving in dynamic organizational settings. A strong emphasis is placed on cultivating research competencies.

The MA curriculum introduces students to rigorous knowledge-generation techniques and enhances their foundational and applied research capabilities. Additionally, participants will refine their ability to derive actionable insights from research findings to effectively fulfill roles as public sector leaders and policy evaluators.

The PhD program is structured to equip scholars for careers in academia and advanced research. Each program component - coursework, comprehensive exams, thesis development, and final defense - systematically builds the candidate's capacity for autonomous, high-caliber research in social sciences.

Qualification Requirements

Admission to the graduate program in Public Administration is governed by the general regulations in effect for graduate studies.

To be considered for admission, applicants must hold a master's degree in Public Administration or in a related discipline with a minimum average of 75% (B+).

Language Requirements
An active knowledge of French and English is essential. All students must successfully complete the course PAP 8510 given in French only and must be able to read texts in French and in English.

Students whose first language is other than French or English must provide proof in their application of their level of competence in these languages. The Public Administration Program reserves the right to conduct an interview and to require a test in either language. If a student's research interests require comprehension of a language other than French or English, the Public Administration Program may require proof of such competency.

In accordance with the University of Ottawa regulation, students have a right to produce their work, their thesis, and to answer examination questions in French or in English.
