The Faculty of Arts' Department of Communication provides multiple graduate options, including an MA in Communication (with thesis or research paper), a coursework-based Master of Communication (MC) with optional co-op, and a PhD in Communication.
Through partnership with the University of Ottawa's Co-op office, select MC students can participate in two paid work terms by applying for the co-op option during admission.
The Department also contributes to the university's collaborative Science, Society and Policy program at the master's level.
The PhD program caters to students with both academic and professional backgrounds, concentrating on two key research areas: media studies and organizational communication. Media studies explores traditional and digital media's content, operations, and broader societal contexts, while organizational communication examines workplace interactions, strategic communication planning across sectors, crisis communication, PR, and organizational technology use.
Graduates will develop these core competencies:
Critically assess foundational theories and concepts in their chosen specialization (media studies or organizational communication).
Navigate diverse epistemological approaches from both Francophone and Anglophone communication scholarship.
Advance academic and professional knowledge through innovative research and practical applications.
Effectively analyze data and present findings to academic, professional, and policy audiences.
Master's programs offer full-time or part-time enrollment in English or French, while the PhD operates bilingually (English-French).
Consistent with university policy, students may complete all coursework, theses, and examinations in either official language.
