Politics permeates every aspect of modern society. The field of political science aims to examine, interpret, evaluate, and comprehend the foundational concepts and dynamics of power that shape communal existence. This discipline explores both the organizational frameworks that establish these power dynamics and the philosophies and actions that propel them. It investigates all factors impacting political systems and structures (including belief systems, collectives, societal initiatives, etc.) across local, provincial, national, and global contexts.
Our curriculum provides comprehensive education in political science while fostering thoughtful analysis of crucial topics such as civic engagement, cultural identity, democratic involvement, worldwide integration and progress, governmental systems, and moral principles in governance. As an interdisciplinary field welcoming diverse theoretical and research methodologies, political science continuously interacts with other academic domains. At the University of Ottawa's School of Political Studies, students develop expertise in four specialized areas: political philosophy, Canadian and Quebec governance, cross-national political analysis, and worldwide diplomatic affairs.
Recognized by the Canadian Federation of Law Societies, the Common Law Section of our Faculty of Law delivers extensive coursework covering constitutional law, civil law, conflict resolution, Indigenous legal systems, international regulations and fundamental freedoms, digital age legislation, and ecological jurisprudence, all complemented by abundant hands-on learning experiences.
