Mathematics extends far beyond simple numerical concepts. Its fundamental purpose is to uncover and represent universal patterns that help us understand our world, whether these patterns appear in neural electrical activity, wildlife population dynamics, financial market trends, or digital communication systems. The influence of mathematics stretches well beyond traditional STEM fields into healthcare, commerce, and social science disciplines.
Breakthroughs in mathematical and statistical research form the foundation for numerous modern technologies we use every day, including medical imaging devices, audio/video compression techniques, encrypted digital communications, information analysis tools, genetic sequencing methods, financial derivatives valuation, and countless other technological advancements.
Our Mathematics and Statistics Department provides specialized programs including Honours degrees, majors, and minors in both mathematics and statistics. The statistics Honours program holds accreditation from the Statistical Society of Canada, enabling graduates to obtain the A.Stat. professional certification. Additionally, we offer combined Honours programs in mathematics with economics or computer science, along with an interdisciplinary program in financial mathematics and economics. All Honours programs are available with cooperative education opportunities.
