Students can choose between thesis and project pathways. The thesis track equips graduate students for research careers or advanced academic pursuits by mandating the development and execution of original research culminating in a thesis. The project alternative offers interdisciplinary training ideal for those with specific career goals, while also serving as a pathway for non-traditional learners (such as working professionals, educators, and career-changers) to enhance their expertise.
The Master of Science thesis pathway caters to students aiming to pursue scientific research careers or advanced academic degrees. Biochemistry thesis candidates must fulfill 3 credit hours of Graduate Seminar (spanning two terms), at least 12 credit hours of approved advanced electives (600-level or higher), and a 12-credit thesis (BCMB 794-12). Electives should focus on scientific disciplines, with the thesis representing an independent study yielding novel scientific findings.
The Master of Science project pathway serves students seeking skill enhancement or those unable to commit to conventional thesis research. Project stream participants must complete 3 credit hours of Graduate Seminar (two terms), a minimum of 18 credit hours of approved electives, and a 6-credit project (BCMB 793-6). Due to its course-heavy structure, project availability depends on faculty resources and established specialization areas. Electives should maintain scientific rigor, while projects involve independent study producing scientific outcomes that may not require original research. This option is only available in predetermined specialization areas within each program.
The standard MSc completion period is two academic years. While this serves as a guideline, supervisory committees may adjust timelines to accommodate individual student research requirements and program needs.
