Literature serves as both a mirror and a shaper of our worldviews, influencing social theories and practices. Engaging with literary works offers students valuable perspectives on historical and contemporary notions of identity, cultural heritage, and human connections across societies. From Aristotle's era onward, scholars have recognized "setting" as a fundamental literary element, making literature a powerful tool for examining our relationship with both human societies and natural environments. In our current global context, where intercultural tensions and ecological crises demand urgent attention, literary analysis creates an essential space for thoughtful discussion and cultural transformation.
English literature studies equip students with vital analytical and integrative abilities, enabling them to tackle intricate issues and formulate creative solutions. More than most academic fields, it prioritizes language proficiency, nurturing strong writing and speaking capabilities that prove invaluable in professional settings.
The English MA program offers flexible full-time or part-time enrollment, with options for either a course-focused path (including ENGL 770-12) or a combination of coursework and thesis research. Each admitted student receives personalized guidance from a supervisor who oversees their academic journey. During initial consultations with their advisory team, students select courses that align with their research interests, typically completing most coursework in the first year. The subsequent year focuses primarily on thesis development or, for course-based candidates, finishing remaining classes and a significant research project.
