This program highlights the global importance of the circumpolar north regarding natural resources, environmental stewardship, Indigenous sovereignty, climate impacts, and international partnerships. Our comprehensive Northern Studies program, available as both a major and minor, is one of just three such degrees in Canada. Graduates enter diverse fields including Arctic policy, public service, nonprofit work, community development, environmental protection, and natural resource governance.
Northern Studies represents a multidisciplinary academic discipline with special significance for northern BC and increasing worldwide importance.
The curriculum integrates Arctic-focused courses across geography, political science, anthropology, and Indigenous studies, supplemented by digital circumpolar studies courses from the University of the Arctic network.
