Founded in 1785, UNB boasts a rich tradition of guiding students in understanding history. Our history department's graduate programs analyze varied societal, institutional, and cultural narratives to better comprehend our modern world. Students gain essential skills in critical analysis, professional writing, and advanced interpretation while delving into this captivating field.
About 50% of our graduate students specialize in Canadian History, with numerous focusing on Atlantic Canadian regional studies. These areas benefit from our affiliated research centers: The Atlantic Canada Studies Centre and the Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society. UNB history alumni pursue fulfilling careers in museums, archives, cultural organizations, government roles, private industry, and academic positions. Presently, our Department of Historical Studies enrolls around 50 MA and PhD students.
MA thesis program requirements:
Completion of 15 credit hours of graduate courses (including Hist6925, Hist6935, and Hist6945)
Potential language requirements based on research focus
A thesis of roughly 100 pages demonstrating original primary research
This program track typically takes five semesters to complete.
