Geoscientists, also known as earth scientists or geologists, examine how oceans and continents form and change over time. Their research covers the creation of mountain systems, valleys, ice formations, and water bodies. These experts analyze triggers and consequences of natural disasters, including those caused by landslides, earthquakes, extreme weather events, water level fluctuations, and volcanic activity.

Geoscientists additionally explore:

how groundwater forms, moves, and maintains purity
methods to track and reduce shoreline and riverbank erosion or overflow
changes in ocean and lake water levels
global climate shifts

They investigate the sources of Earth's raw materials and play key roles in finding and sustainably developing resources like metals, salts, water reserves, construction materials, and energy sources that support modern infrastructure, farming, and technology.

Effective city planning and environmental restoration efforts depend on thorough understanding of geological processes.
