Geology examines Earth's physical composition and natural processes. Environmental Geoscience focuses on how geological and geographic factors interact with ecological systems.
The University of Regina's geology and environmental geoscience programs address contemporary challenges, as modern societies demand greater mineral and energy resources while facing environmental constraints. Climate change, resource shortages, and pollution increasingly limit sustainable development and alter our habitats.
Environmental Geology explores Earth's fundamental characteristics, from plate tectonics to geological time. It investigates natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, and surface events like floods and landslides, assessing their effects on human settlements. The discipline also analyzes human influences on geology, including resource extraction, waste management, and environmental contamination through a geological lens.
