The Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics provides a two-year Master of Science program in Genetic Counselling, offered jointly with the Shared Health Program of Genetics and Metabolism
Genetic counselling integrates scientific knowledge of hereditary conditions with compassionate understanding of the emotional challenges and intricate ethical considerations surrounding genetic diseases. These specialized healthcare practitioners complete rigorous graduate-level education, earning an MSc in Genetic Counselling. They serve across multiple genetic disciplines such as Cancer Genetics, Prenatal Genetics, Pediatric Genetics, and Metabolic Genetics, while also contributing to public health initiatives and laboratory settings. The Genetic Counselling Program (GCP) grants a Master of Science degree through a partnership between the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority's Genetics and Metabolism Program and the University of Manitoba's Biochemistry and Medical Genetics department. Trainees learn from a diverse team including Medical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors, Genetic Assistants, and PhD-level scientists. The 30-credit program spans two years with these components: At least 23 credits of 7000-level coursework, Weekly clinical academic sessions, and a Research Thesis requirement.
