The Department of Physics and Astronomy provides educational programs exploring nature's fundamental principles, covering subjects from quantum mechanics' probabilistic nature to stellar evolution and complex particle interactions. Students can pursue Bachelor of Science degrees (general, major, honors, or joint honors) as well as graduate studies culminating in Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy qualifications. The department's faculty includes 22 Professors, 2 Distinguished Professors, 4 Emeritus Professors, 9 Senior Scholars, and 21 Adjunct Professors, conducting cutting-edge research across diverse fields including astrophysics, atomic physics, materials science, and medical physics. Researchers utilize specialized equipment like advanced microscopes, high-precision mass spectrometers, cryogenic systems, and computational resources, while also collaborating with international facilities such as TRIUMF, Argonne National Laboratory, and space observatories. Local medical physics investigations occur at university and city hospital laboratories, with computational studies performed using the university's High Performance Computing Facility. The doctoral program combines advanced coursework with extensive research, typically completed within four years.
