Chemistry explores the characteristics and interactions of atoms and molecules, the fundamental building blocks of all substances. This field plays a crucial role in numerous aspects of our physical world - from creating food and manufacturing drugs, fabrics, and synthetic materials to generating energy, detecting environmental issues with solutions, and deciphering biological processes. The Department provides instruction and conducts investigations across nearly every chemical discipline, ranging from abstract theories to intensive organic compound creation, from analyzing cosmic molecular spectra to examining protein structures within organisms, and from studying high-temperature ionic conductor crystals to tracking mercury buildup in polar ecosystems.
