Chemistry explores the characteristics of matter's basic components, from individual hydrogen atoms to complex biological structures. Researchers in this field create novel compounds while analyzing their makeup and architecture. These investigations, combined with examining reaction mechanisms, help develop theories about molecular interactions and chemical processes.
This discipline serves as a springboard for rewarding professions in medical fields and laboratory sciences, as well as opportunities in drug development and genetic studies. A chemistry background enables groundbreaking research across diverse practical applications, including polymer production, food science, and advanced materials for construction, vehicles, and digital devices.
Students can pursue Chemistry as a primary focus, secondary specialization, minor, or honors track within a four-year Bachelor of Science program. The Faculty of Science, established alongside UNB in 1785, maintains exceptional recognition worldwide. Learners gain from its distinguished research output and highly-regarded graduate and certified undergraduate offerings. The department's influential work has positioned four faculty members among the globe's top 1% most-referenced chemistry researchers in scholarly publications.
Students must complete high school for admission to the University of New Brunswick. They must complete six specific high school courses, according to their program of choice. UNB takes the overall average of the high school grades achieved in these six courses to calculate the student’s "minimum admission average", which is used to determine admissibility.
Course requirements:
Senior English Literature
Senior Math, including Pre-Calculus
1 other academic maths
Senior Chemistry
1 of Senior Physics, Senior Biology or Senior Geology (Senior Physics is required for entry into Health Sciences)
1 elective from group 1 or 2
Minimum admission average: 75% (The average marks in Pre-Calculus Math, Chemistry and the best other Science course must be at least 75 %.)
The University of New Brunswick accepts qualified applicants from all countries. Entry requirements may vary from country to country.
International students require the following English language proficiency minimum scores for direct entry into most academic programs: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 85, CAEL 60, or Pearson Vue Test 59.
