Expand your understanding of living beings and examine all facets of life through our comprehensive Biological Sciences curriculum. Investigate topics ranging from microscopic cellular mechanisms to broad ecological relationships among organisms and their habitats, including how environmental changes influence these dynamics. Whatever your passion within the life sciences, our department offers outstanding educational experiences and guidance for every student.
Biology explores life's evolution and ongoing development on Earth. This discipline investigates all life dimensions, from intracellular molecular activities to ecosystem-level organism interactions and environmental impacts. Specialization options include: Cellular, Molecular and Developmental Biology; Environmental and Integrative Physiology; Evolution and Biodiversity; Ecology and Environmental Biology; and Integrative Biology. The Biological Sciences Department provides foundational courses covering general biology, fungal/algal/animal/plant diversity, genetics, cellular biology, physiology, ecology, and evolution. Additionally, we offer diverse coursework in invertebrate/vertebrate anatomy, plant/animal ecology and physiology, boreal ecosystems, molecular biology, mycology, entomology, developmental biology, freshwater systems, fish biology, ornithology, animal behavior, and mammalogy. Our program combines lectures with hands-on lab work and occasional field excursions. Undergraduates can choose from over 80 courses, with opportunities to take biology-related classes from other departments like microbiology, biochemistry, agriculture, environmental science, and human genetics across campus.
