Biology explores life's development and ongoing changes on Earth. It investigates all life dimensions, from microscopic cellular activities to broad ecological relationships among organisms and their habitats, plus how environmental shifts influence these connections. Specializations: Cellular, Molecular, and Developmental Biology; Environmental and Integrative Physiology; Evolution and Biodiversity; Ecology and Environmental Biology; Integrative Biology. The Biological Sciences Department provides foundational courses covering general biology, fungal/algal/animal/plant diversity, genetics, cellular biology, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary studies. Additionally, we provide diverse courses spanning invertebrate/vertebrate anatomy, plant/animal ecology and physiology, northern ecosystems, molecular biology, fungal studies, insect science, growth biology, freshwater systems, fish biology, bird science, animal behavior, and mammal studies. Our Biological Sciences curriculum combines classroom instruction with hands-on lab work, occasionally including outdoor excursions. Undergraduates can choose from more than 80 courses. Students may also enroll in biology-related classes from other departments, including microbiology, biochemistry, agricultural sciences, environmental studies, and human genetics—essentially any relevant subject across the university.
