Linguistics examines the structure, acquisition, and application of human language, its evolution through time, and how words and grammatical forms convey meaning in communication.
As a linguistics student, you'll investigate diverse sub-disciplines: semantics, phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, the biological basis of language, language change, sociolinguistics, sign language, and language-gender connections. The BA Advanced requires 120 credit hours with at least a 2.00 GPA in mandatory courses. Students choose either a major-minor combination or pursue a double major instead of a minor.

Qualification Requirements
The following are minimum requirements for entry into the Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
Direct entry applicants are those who have not attended a post-secondary institution or have completed fewer than 24 credit hours at a recognized university or college.
Advanced entry applicants are those who have completed one year (24 credit hours) or more of studies in another faculty at the University of Manitoba or another recognized post-secondary institution.
