Currently, more than 100 million individuals speak French with fluency, while nearly 300 million people globally possess some proficiency in the language. As one of Canada's dual official languages, French extends beyond Western Europe and North America, reaching significant populations across Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.
The French program immerses students in the study of language, diverse cultures, and literary works spanning from the 17th century to contemporary times, encompassing writings from throughout La Francophonie.
After introductory courses, the curriculum covers all major domains of French linguistics and literature, from medieval periods to modern times, featuring works from French Canada, Francophone African nations, and translation studies. The program also includes instruction on French and Quebecois cinema, along with African Francophone films, supported by departmental experts in these fields. Annually, renowned guest scholars deliver specialized lectures and occasionally lead advanced seminars for upper-level students.
