The MFA Art program enables graduate students to engage in modern art creation through both theoretical study and hands-on practice. Students explore material, critical, and conceptual approaches in an open studio environment, guided by faculty who are practicing artists and scholars. The program values Indigenous knowledge and cultural viewpoints, complemented by a robust Visiting Speakers in the Art Program that facilitates weekly discussions with diverse professionals, including artists, architects, curators, critics, and historians. With top-tier studios, technical resources, and proximity to acclaimed galleries and arts institutions, students benefit from exceptional exhibition opportunities and engagement within a dynamic cultural scene.
The University of Lethbridge houses one of Canada's most extensive and accessible art collections, giving students direct exposure to national and international works from the 19th to 21st centuries. The Visiting Speakers in the Arts Program further connects students with global artists, writers, critics, and curators. MFA candidates are urged to expand their studio work by engaging with the Art History/Museum Studies Program and other Fine Arts graduate disciplines (New Media, Music, and Drama). The University's liberal arts emphasis also allows for interdisciplinary coursework and collaborations across Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences.
