The Master of Arts in History program is offered at the Lethbridge campus and combines thesis work with significant coursework. MA candidates can pursue their studies either full-time or part-time. Full-time students typically graduate within 24 months, whereas part-time students have a 48-month timeline. Many students complete their degrees ahead of schedule, with most full-time candidates finishing in 20-24 months and some part-time students completing in as little as 28 months.
Full-time participants finish all mandatory coursework during their first two semesters, while part-time students generally complete these requirements within their initial two academic years. Both tracks then dedicate the remaining time to thesis research and writing.
This graduate program emphasizes close collaboration between students and faculty supervisors. Prospective students must secure a faculty supervisor's endorsement before applying, as applications without this support won't be considered. Those seeking supervisors should reach out directly to faculty members or the History Department. Once a supervisor is confirmed, they typically assemble a Supervisory Committee with other faculty members.
Course selection occurs through consultation with the supervisor prior to program commencement. The curriculum includes 3-6 full-course equivalents, with all History students taking the core Historiography seminar (History 5000). Additional coursework may include half-semester Cultural, Social, and Political Thought (CSPT) classes, upgraded undergraduate seminars, and Independent Studies.
Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree (i.e. an undergraduate degree) in a related discipline from a recognized degree-granting institution; Have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 (based on 4.00 scale) on the last 20 graded university-level term courses OR calculated on the most recently completed master’s degree if the applicant is applying for another master’s degree.
