The Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics provides courses in three languages: French, Japanese, and Spanish (from beginner to advanced levels). With intimate class settings, state-of-the-art language-learning tools, and our faculty's wide-ranging knowledge, language studies become an engaging and rewarding journey. In our interconnected world, modern language students gain the skills to participate in an international society that reaches well beyond English-speaking nations. Learning modern languages goes beyond mere communication—it's a deep dive into different worldviews, traditions, histories, and cultures within our global village. Currently, French holds official status in nearly 50 countries, including Canada, and serves as an official language for the United Nations, the Red Cross, and numerous global institutions, with over 200 million speakers worldwide. The expansion of French Immersion programs across Canada—and the growing demand for certified instructors—highlights French's enduring and expanding significance in our nation.
