The Department of Mathematics and Statistics within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Guelph is a vibrant community of researchers and educators spanning diverse disciplines. Our department provides comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs that highlight the applications of mathematics and statistics while equipping students for professional paths in Mathematical Sciences. While the two disciplines have distinct course requirements and examination focus areas, they share significant overlap in both theoretical approaches and practical applications. The shared philosophy centers on developing and verifying models for real-world scenarios. Applied mathematics specializes in dynamical systems, mathematical biology, numerical analysis, and operations research. Applied statistics focuses on implementing statistical methods to analyze data from practical problems, with particular attention to biological applications. Key specialization areas include linear/nonlinear modeling, bioassay techniques, and survival analysis with reliability testing.
