Microbiology programs equip students with comprehensive knowledge of microorganisms, covering their diversity, ecology, physiology, molecular genetics, modern bacterial genomics and proteomics techniques, as well as their relationships with animal hosts and ecosystems. This foundation prepares graduates for careers involving microbes in medical, agricultural (biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, food production), and environmental sectors (monitoring and bioremediation).
Through this major, you'll examine microorganisms' interactions with their surroundings and investigate the ever-changing diversity of bacteria, viruses, archaea, and fungi. Microbiology applications span from creating antibiotics and studying resistance mechanisms to understanding gut microbiota's role in health, and utilizing yeast in food and beverage manufacturing.
The Microbiology co-op program spans five years, incorporating four work placements that offer practical laboratory experience, enhancing your professional skills and giving you a competitive edge in the job market.
