The Child Studies program explores how children learn, develop, and mature from psychological, biological, and social viewpoints, with families recognized as the primary environment for child development. It investigates approaches to supporting children in diverse and inclusive environments, highlighting the significance of early education and timely interventions. Through coursework and mandatory practicum placements, students acquire both theoretical understanding and hands-on skills, accumulating more than 500 hours of direct experience with children across various settings. Upon graduation, students qualify to seek membership with the College of Early Childhood Educators.
By strategically selecting electives, students can enhance the major's core curriculum to tailor their studies for specific career paths involving children and families. Alumni find employment in elementary schools, hospital pediatric departments, community service organizations, childcare centers, and youth treatment programs. Many graduates continue their education in disciplines like teaching, social services, speech therapy, occupational therapy, child development, nursing, psychology, family counseling, sociology, and family research.
The secondary school graduation certificate which would admit a student to an internationally recognized university in his or her home country is normally acceptable for admission to the University of Guelph.
