The Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) operates as an interdisciplinary research center and graduate program that combines problem-solving with intellectual exploration. We address diverse environmental and sustainability challenges through integrated approaches. Our goal is to promote sustainable solutions by studying the connections between human societies and natural ecosystems, while aiding policy decisions across various scales. This work frequently involves collaborative efforts among students and faculty, leveraging our diverse expertise, backgrounds, and methodologies while embracing our interconnectedness when tackling practical environmental issues.
The Resources, Environment and Sustainability (RES) graduate program serves as an academic hub for interdisciplinary scholars, emphasizing the synthesis of ecological, socioeconomic, and political dimensions of resource management within sustainable environmental frameworks.

Qualification Requirements
Applicants for a master's degree program must hold the academic equivalent of a four-year bachelor's degree from UBC with: a minimum overall average in the B+ grade range (76-79% at UBC) in third-year level and above courses; or academic standing with at least 12 credits of third- or fourth-year courses in the A grade range (80% or higher at UBC) in the field of study; or applicants who have a four-year bachelor's degree, or its academic equivalent, which does not meet the requirements stated above, but who have had significant formal training and relevant professional experience to offset such deficiencies, may be granted admission on the recommendation of the appropriate graduate program or faculty and approval of the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies.
