Journalists have long aimed to deliver news and information with precision, speed, and clarity, empowering people to make well-informed choices. However, journalism is undergoing transformation, as digital advancements dissolve the lines between professional news creation, citizen reporting, and activist communication. The UBC Master of Journalism program strives to cultivate graduates who grasp this shifting media landscape and can employ journalistic methods to enrich public dialogue across all media platforms.
The Master of Journalism (MJ) is a rigorous, full-time program featuring a summer internship. It equips students with both practical experience and theoretical foundations to thrive in today's digital knowledge society. Participants gain essential competencies to address the complexities and possibilities of the changing digital media world, mastering techniques like investigative journalism, multimedia storytelling (web, audio, visual, and data formats), immersive narratives, and social media metrics.
Our unique journalism curriculum combines two key elements: scholarly focus and vocational preparation. Students pursue specialized academic studies aligned with their interests and expertise, while simultaneously receiving practical instruction in multimedia production from industry veterans.
To be eligible for our program, applicants to the Graduate School of Journalism must complete, prior to the first day of classes, the following requirements:
A degree in any discipline that is academically equivalent to a UBC 4-year Bachelor’s degree
Cumulative grade point average of a minimum B+ average in 300 & 400 (upper) level coursework (Note: if your degree is from an eligible three-year program, then all three years of your final grades will be calculated to determine your grade point average. For all other transcripts outside of Canada and the United States, your total cumulative GPA from your previous degree will be considered).
If you graduated from a program in which English is not the primary language of instruction, you must achieve the following language proficiency requirements:
TOEFL score of 615 on the paper-based test, 260 on the computer-based test, or 104 on the internet-based test
IELTS score of 7.5 with no subsection score lower than 6.5.
