The M.F.A. Directing program focuses on professional development, designed for individuals looking to expand and refine their directing skills. This prestigious program attracts dedicated theater practitioners, with a highly selective admission process that accepts just one or two candidates annually. Applicants generally possess five or more years of professional theater background. Participants immerse themselves in both the theoretical and hands-on aspects of theater production. The first year involves exploring diverse preparation methods, rehearsal approaches, and the nuances of various performance genres. During the second year, students collaborate with a Creative Writing/Theatre M.A. candidate to develop a new work, while also directing two complete productions. The thesis project requires mounting a complex theatrical work, accompanied by in-depth research on the play's style, author, historical context, and thematic objectives. Candidates document their directing methodology, critically evaluate their work, and justify their creative decisions through written analysis and oral defense.
