The Social Studies program boasts a dynamic learning atmosphere with exceptional opportunities for graduate students from diverse backgrounds, covering areas like visual culture, anti-oppressive education, gender studies, historical awareness, ethics in education, and curriculum history and policy. The MEd is a coursework-focused degree that doesn't mandate a research thesis.
Social Studies takes pride in cultivating an enriching academic setting with unmatched prospects for graduate students pursuing varied interests, spanning visual culture, equity-focused pedagogy, gender research, historical understanding, values education, and curriculum development studies. Beyond core courses, the program nurtures a lively graduate community through lecture series, research hubs, workshops, and discussion circles. Numerous faculty and students actively participate in The History Education Network.
The Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy provides a PhD concentration, along with MA and MEd specializations in Social Studies Education, complemented by a secondary Teacher Education (BEd) major and a Diploma in Social Studies Education.
One to two years’ of teacher education; or a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Education. In special circumstances teacher education may be waived for those applicants who have a university degree with sufficient standing and experience related to their proposed field of study.
PREREQUISITES / COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Normally 18 credits of senior course work or a professional concentration in the area of interest.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Normally two years teaching experience or other relevant professional experience.
