Notable recent and acclaimed publications feature works such as Gillian Creese's The New African Diaspora (University of Toronto Press), Amin Ghaziani's There Goes the Gayborhood (Princeton University Press), Renisa Mawani's Colonial Proximities (UBC Press), Becki Ross's Burlesque West: Showgirls, Sex, and Sin in Postwar Vancouver (University of Toronto Press), and Wendy Roth's Race Migrations (Stanford University Press).

The department also emphasizes experiential learning through community partnerships, offering students practical research opportunities with local organizations like RainCity Housing, SPEC, the City of Vancouver, Neighborhood House Association, and Be The Change. With a well-established co-op program, UBC Sociology additionally operates the Immigrant Vancouver Ethnographic Field School in collaboration with the Anthropology Department.
