Psychology is a multifaceted field dedicated to exploring the foundations of human behavior, cognition, and feelings. At UBC, psychology began as just one course in 1915, originally taught within the Philosophy Department. As time passed, both the curriculum and faculty expanded, leading to the establishment of the standalone Psychology Department in 1958.

The study of developmental psychology examines how behaviors evolve from infancy through childhood and into later life stages. Researchers in this area investigate diverse subjects such as speech perception, language learning, social-cognitive growth, social learning processes, decision-making patterns, moral development, and the origins of stereotypes and biases.
