Music theories explore how listeners, composers, and performers understand the fundamental components of their craft. At UBC, theoretical studies enhance every facet of musical education. Our distinguished faculty comprises globally recognized scholars advancing research in rhythm and meter, music cognition, computational approaches, teaching methodologies, and the analysis of contemporary art music alongside global traditional music.

Graduate students receive professional guidance through immersive seminars, teaching opportunities, research positions, and conference engagements. We encourage interdisciplinary investigations that bridge musicology, ethnomusicology, mathematics, linguistics, and other relevant musical disciplines.
