UBC's sociology department maintains a distinguished legacy of producing impactful research. Notable recent and acclaimed publications feature works such as Gillian Creese's The New African Diaspora (University of Toronto Press), Amin Ghaziani's There Goes the Gayborhood (Princeton University Press), Renisa Mawani's Colonial Proximities (UBC Press), Becki Ross' Burlesque West: Showgirls, Sex, and Sin in Postwar Vancouver (University of Toronto Press), and Wendy Roth's Race Migrations (Stanford University Press).

The sociology program at UBC also emphasizes community engagement and service-learning initiatives, offering students practical research opportunities with local Vancouver organizations (including RainCity Housing, SPEC, City of Vancouver, Neighborhood House Association, and Be The Change). With a robust co-op program, the department additionally operates the Immigrant Vancouver Ethnographic Field School in collaboration with the Anthropology Department.
