The Law PhD program offers specialized advanced education for exceptional graduate students who hold an LLM or equivalent qualification. This research-focused degree equips graduates for careers in legal academia, scholarly research, policy formulation, government roles, and legal practice.
Program components encompass coursework, comprehensive examinations, dissertation proposal development and defense, original dissertation writing, and a final oral examination. Under faculty supervision, PhD candidates must complete a substantial, publishable work of original legal scholarship.
This program enables concentrated study in a specific legal discipline. Note that the PhD alone does not meet the requirements for admission to the British Columbia bar or other legal practice certifications.
Completion of either an LLB or JD and a Masters degree.
