The French Studies Graduate Program features an engaging curriculum centered on exploring the languages, literatures, and cultures of France, Québec, and Francophone regions through contextual analysis. Students can concentrate on literature, linguistics, or design an interdisciplinary research path blending both areas.
Innovative Research Opportunities:
Our doctoral program in French Studies delivers diverse graduate courses led by an expanding faculty renowned for pioneering research spanning Medieval literature to contemporary Francophone cultures. The program fosters rigorous academic development through research clusters, reading groups, and seminars. Students can engage with or spearhead these initiatives within the department or through interdisciplinary collaborations with centers like Green College, the Public Humanities Hub, and the Liu Institute for Global Issues. Furthermore, our co-tutelle doctoral option enables candidates to work with dual supervisors—from UBC and a French partner institution—earning a joint Ph.D. recognized by both universities.
Career Advancement:
We offer robust Teaching Assistant preparation alongside professional development workshops covering grant applications, publishing strategies, and conference participation to equip graduates with versatile skills for societal impact. Recent surveys indicate that 75% of our PhD alumni secure academic positions.
Engaged Community:
The yearly Graduate Student Symposium showcases student research department-wide, while the biennial FHIS Graduate Conference—organized by students with faculty support—provides a forum to present findings, connect with scholars globally, and gain event-planning experience. Through the FHIS Learning Centre, graduate volunteers tutor undergraduates in departmental languages. The FHIS Cultural Club also fosters dialogue on pressing social and cultural topics, strengthening ties within our close-knit academic community.
