Environmental Systems Engineering (ESE) specializes in safeguarding the quality of water, land, and urban environments. For three decades, UBC's ESE Group has been an international pioneer in this discipline. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Group pioneered advancements in biological phosphorus removal methods. In the 1990s, it played a key role in sustaining Canada's dominance in eco-friendly innovations across industries like forestry and urban/agricultural waste management. Entering the 21st century, the Group remains at the forefront by creating and implementing technologies to tackle pressing environmental issues worldwide. Current research initiatives focus on extracting nutrients and energy from waste streams (using methods like anaerobic membrane bioreactors and phosphorus crystallization) and producing purified water (through integrated biological systems and membrane-based solutions).
