The Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) program caters to accomplished performers seeking to elevate their artistry while preparing for academic careers. This intensive program combines advanced performance training with rigorous scholarly work in music history, theory, and specialized disciplines. Performance candidates undertake additional research in performance practice and musical literature alongside their core studies. UBC's distinguished DMA in Orchestral Instrument Performance features world-class faculty members who perform with leading ensembles like the Vancouver Symphony and Vancouver Opera Orchestra, while maintaining active careers as soloists and recording artists.

Students benefit from personalized mentorship with dedicated faculty and access to masterclasses featuring globally acclaimed artists. The School of Music offers exceptional ensemble performance opportunities across diverse musical genres.

With selective admissions and limited enrollment, the program ensures each student receives substantial performance experience to reach their highest artistic potential.

Orchestral Instrument Performance students regularly perform with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Bands, and various chamber groups, while also participating in opera productions. The program rotates students through different large ensembles each season, exposing them to varied repertoire under multiple conductors.

Additional performance opportunities exist with regional ensembles including the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Island Symphony, and professional groups throughout British Columbia, providing valuable real-world experience in both community and professional music settings.
