The Department of Linguistics stands out within the Faculty of Arts as the sole provider of a Master of Science degree. Prospective MSc students can opt for either a course-focused or thesis-focused program. Both pathways mandate completing two core courses: LING 601 - Phonology I and 602 - Seminar in Syntax, along with a selection of elective courses determined in collaboration with the student's advisor. While elective choices vary based on individual academic backgrounds and research interests, the Department particularly recommends LING 501 - Research Project Seminar for incoming MSc candidates. Qualification Requirements
For the MSc program, the Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. Official copies of all transcripts for all previous postsecondary schooling showing marks obtained (submitted in the original language, accompanied by a certified English translation)
