Machine learning offers techniques and systems for uncovering meaningful insights in data, like identifying connections between medical test outcomes and treatment effectiveness. It's particularly useful when working with existing training datasets (such as collections of case studies) and when developing custom solutions would be impractical or too expensive.

As an established technology, machine learning has made substantial contributions across both commercial and scientific domains. Its applications span diverse fields including healthcare, petroleum exploration, genetic research, and industrial automation, among others.

This research group maintains strong connections with several adjacent disciplines such as bioinformatics, database systems, data mining, computer vision, and robotics. For graduate students, there's an opportunity to pursue a specialized focus in Statistical Machine Learning through a collaborative program with Mathematics and Statistical Sciences departments.

Qualification Requirements

A 3.0 GPA is typically the minimum GPA for acceptance in an MSc or PhD program. However, we may consider slightly lower GPAs in exceptional circumstances or due to small discrepancies in international GPA conversion rates. Meeting the 3.0 GPA minimum requirement does not guarantee admission. Our department admissions process is highly competitive and the Admissions Committee often selects students with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT, in-person or special at-home edition) - A minimum TOEFL score of 100 with a minimum score of 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based), or equivalent, Academic International English Language Testing System IELTS - Academic - A minimum overall band score of 7.0 with a minimum score of 6.5 on each band. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (either CAEL [paper] or CAEL CE [computer]) - A minimum overall score of 70 on the CAEL with at least 60 on each subtest.
