Our program features the Alberta Chamber of Resources Chair in Mining Engineering, the Canada Research Chair in Natural Resources Uncertainty Management, and the Centre for Computational Geostatistics.

Mining engineers plan both surface and underground mining operations, oversee the development of mine shafts and underground tunnels, and create systems for mineral transportation to processing facilities. The curriculum covers explosives and blasting, rock mechanics, economics, various mining disciplines, business and environmental considerations, alongside fundamental engineering courses in mechanical, civil, electrical, and chemical engineering. The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering along with the School of Mining & Petroleum Engineering provides undergraduate and graduate students with top-tier education and facilities in North America.

Qualification Requirements

A baccalaureate degree or its academic equivalent from an accredited academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two-years of full-time study (or equivalent) (MSc Program)
3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two-years of full-time study (or equivalent) (MEng Program)
3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two-years of full-time study (or equivalent) (PhD Program)

The Department's minimum admission requirements are a four-year undergraduate degree with an average of 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate work (or graduate work) at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution and a TOEFL score of 90 (internet-based with at least 21 per section) or an equivalent approved English language examination where applicable. IELTS - 6.5, with at least 6.0 on each test band. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment - Overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest.
