Geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers possess expertise in analyzing soil and rock characteristics, as well as their dynamics with fluids. Our curriculum features several distinctive courses unavailable elsewhere in Canada. Students gain hands-on experience through cutting-edge facilities including specialized cold rooms, the Oil Sands Tailings Research Center, geotechnical centrifuges, mine waste laboratories, and outdoor research sites.

Through the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and the School of Mining & Petroleum Engineering, both undergraduate and graduate students receive top-tier education with access to premier North American learning resources.

Qualification Requirements

A baccalaureate degree or its academic equivalent from an accredited academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two-years of full-time study (or equivalent) (MSc Program)
3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two-years of full-time study (or equivalent) (MEng Program)
3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two-years of full-time study (or equivalent) (PhD Program)

The Department's minimum admission requirements are a four-year undergraduate degree with an average of 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate work (or graduate work) at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution and a TOEFL score of 90 (internet-based with at least 21 per section) or an equivalent approved English language examination where applicable. IELTS - 6.5, with at least 6.0 on each test band. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment - Overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest.
