The Chemistry Master of Science program is a thesis-driven curriculum where students undertake research projects guided by faculty advisors. After completing their research (usually spanning two years), candidates must present and defend their thesis before an examination panel to earn their degree.
The Chemistry Department provides thesis-based M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, both combining coursework with original research. Students benefit from exceptional academic resources across analytical, inorganic, organic, physical chemistry, and chemical biology disciplines. Faculty specialists cover diverse fields including: polymer/materials science, environmental chemistry, chemical physics, nanoscience/nanotechnology, energy storage/conversion, computational/theoretical chemistry, glycomics, metabolomics, proteomics, catalysis, molecular electronics, natural product synthesis, and solid-state chemistry.
With over 220 graduate students, plus postdoctoral researchers and associates, the Department maintains its legacy of research distinction. Its facilities, support staff, and funding rank among Canada's finest, while faculty members consistently receive recognition for both teaching excellence and groundbreaking research contributions.
The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution
