The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Nutritional Science provides graduate programs with thesis options for Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, alongside course-based Master of Agriculture and Master of Science programs. Program requirements are outlined in the Agricultural, Food, and Nutritional Science Program Handbook. Research facilities at the Edmonton Research Station feature specialized centers including: Crops and Land Resources, Alberta Poultry Research Centre, Swine Research and Technology Centre, Dairy Research and Technology Centre, Composting and Feedmill Facilities, the Laird McElroy Metabolism and Environmental Research Centre, and Agri-Food Discovery Place. Nearby research stations within an hour's drive include the Ministik Wildlife Field Station and Kinsella Research Ranch, supporting beef cattle studies. On North Campus, the Department maintains advanced laboratories with greenhouses, plant growth facilities, a Human Nutrition Research Unit, Agri-Food Materials Science Lab, Agriculture Genomics and Proteomics lab, Food Microbiology lab, and sensory evaluation facilities.

For thesis-based MSc candidates, program duration depends on prior qualifications and research scope, typically requiring two years of study and investigation to fulfill degree requirements.

Qualification Requirements

For a thesis-based MSc degree, the Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. All applicants are also required to submit
a Curriculum Vitae,
a Motivation Letter Form (course-based MSc Specializations in Food Safety and Quality or Meat Quality) or a Research Statement Form (all other graduate degrees) (available in the application portal),
names and contact information of three references.

English is the primary language of instruction and communication at the University of Alberta, and all applicants must be proficient in English before admission. International applicants must be able to demonstrate English Language Proficiency (ELP) at the time of application. You can demonstrate ELP in several ways, including education, examination and secondary school coursework. TOEFL iBT, in-person or special at-home edition - Total score of 90 with a score of at least 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) or equivalent. IELTS - 6.5, with at least 6.0 on each test band. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment - Overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest.
