The Department of English and Film Studies (EFS) provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, focusing on English language, literature, and cultural studies. EFS research encompasses diverse scholarly investigations aimed at interpreting, analyzing, and creating literary and cultural works in their broadest sense. Faculty members conduct innovative research spanning four primary areas: literary history, print culture, critical theory, and screen media studies.

The University's library system contains approximately 9 million volume equivalents, placing it among Canada's top two and North America's top twenty academic collections. It provides access to more than 100,000 digital journals and 1,100 research databases. Special Collections houses over 100,000 rare books along with substantial archival materials.

Qualification Requirements

1. Decide whether you want to apply to the course-based MA or the thesis-based MA.

2. Determine if you meet the program requirements.

academic standing in English of at least 3.3 on a 4 point scale (B+ equivalent)
wide coverage of English courses (historical period, theory, approaches)
BA in English or at least 54credits (18 courses) in English

Evidence of English Language Proficiency. International applicants who are not exempt need to demonstrate English Language Proficiency through one of the following exam scores:
TOEFL: minimum score of 600 (paper-based) or a total score of 100 with a score of at least 22 in each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) Please note that the University of Alberta does not accept computer-based TOEFL results
IELTS: minimum overall band score of 7, with at least 6.5 on each band
4. Ask 3 referees to provide a reference for you. The online system will contact them.
