Our graduate program employs an apprenticeship approach to cultivate highly skilled, autonomous researchers poised to advance the field of psychology. Through close mentorship from our distinguished faculty, students engage in substantial research opportunities from the outset. Our alumni hold prominent positions across academia, government agencies, and private sector organizations.
The University of Alberta's Psychology Department actively promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion. We invite applications from all qualified candidates, with particular encouragement for women, Indigenous peoples, visible minorities, individuals with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community - all of whom enrich our program's diversity.
Developmental Science examines human growth and variation across social, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive domains throughout the lifespan. Our faculty employ cutting-edge quantitative methods to study developmental processes in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Current research concentrates on four key areas:
Cognitive Development and Aging - Investigating executive function, healthy aging, and neurodegenerative conditions like dementia and Alzheimer's.
Social Cognition - Exploring the formation of age-related stereotypes and their societal impacts.
Developmental Neuroscience - Examining interactions between brain development, genetics, environment, and cognition.
Emotional and Social Development - Studying mental health, self-regulation, and interpersonal relationships across developmental stages.
