Our graduate program employs an apprenticeship approach to cultivate highly skilled, autonomous researchers poised to advance the field of psychology. Through hands-on, mentor-guided research opportunities with distinguished faculty, students gain early and continuous research experience. Our alumni hold prominent positions across academia, government agencies, and private sector organizations.
The University of Alberta's Psychology Department fosters equity, diversity, and inclusion. We invite applications from qualified candidates of all backgrounds, including women; Indigenous peoples (First Nations, Métis, Inuit); visible minorities; individuals with disabilities; and people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. We value contributions that enhance our program's diversity.
Behavioural Neuroscience - Investigates brain-behavior relationships using animal models, examining genetic, emotional, and neurological influences on behavior, learning, and memory. This research informs therapeutic interventions for brain injury rehabilitation.
Systems Neuroscience - Studies neural mechanisms underlying behavioral states (e.g., sleep/wake cycles) and how sensory systems process complex stimuli like species-specific vocalizations.
Cognitive Neuroscience - Combines experimental methods, clinical case studies, and neuroimaging to examine neural bases of higher cognitive processes including memory, language, reasoning, and visual recognition.
