Students have the opportunity to complete their PhD through the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) at the University of Alberta by combining it with another university department that offers a doctoral program. Applicants must currently apply as Individual Interdisciplinary PhD candidates to their chosen department, submitting a study proposal that includes co-supervision by a SLIS faculty member. Recent participants in this program have worked with advisors from Education, Nursing, and Psychology departments. Details about the Individual Interdisciplinary PhD can be obtained from Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies. Prospective students should consult with potential SLIS supervisors and the Graduate Coordinator, as well as their counterparts in their secondary department.
SLIS strongly recommends that applicants seek financial support for their doctoral studies during the application phase. Applications are accepted year-round, but since securing supervisors and finalizing documentation can take several months, students should initiate the process roughly one year before their intended enrollment date.
